Hello, Ive purchased a property and want to put ceramic tiles in the front room.
Ive looked under the carpet and the main surface is these dark brown tiles Ive seen in alot of houses under the carpet.
Is that surface suitable for laying ceramic tiles?

Im thinking these tiles http://www.wickes.co.uk/Havana-Ceramic-Floor-Tiles/invt/235300

Are the cheaper ones likely to crack?

Thanks

My other half and me are busy rennovating an old cottage and we have found that the best thing to do was to take up all the old flooring, see what the surface is like underneath, clean and if necessary put down some self-levelling cement.

This has given the ceramic tiles a lovely flat surface on which to be laid, making for an evenness of grouting.

In the sitting room we actually dug up our floor to a depth of nearly 3', as the cottage is built on earth, then put in a layer of concrete foundation, followed by a layer of jablite for warmth, and a thinner layer of concrete on top, we then laid the ceramic tiles on top of that. The whole floor has been down now for over 3 years and we have never had a moments problem with it.

So much easier to keep clean as well, espeicially after a muddy country walk. :)
