Hi
I'm looking at buying a property that is currently served with a cesspit . If I were to replace this with a septic tank & soakaway would I still need to apply for planning?
The existing cesspit has been in the ground at least 60 years

It's not listed. It was just that I've seen applications in the weekly planning register relating to sewage treatment but I guess these were related to new developments.

Thanks

If you have any doubts whatsoever your local Planning will happily confirm one way or the other. ;)

Can the cesspit be converted into a pump pit to pump the sewage to the main drains?

I think a new septic tank will be difficult to gain permission and you will probably need a discharge licence or similar from the environment agency or similar as well as building regs approval.
