Speak to your building control office and ask them. Different offices make different demands. They are not onerous. You may be able to find them on the web.

Speak to BC if you feel the urge. 99.9% of people would just do the work. I'd bet a shilling they won't be interested if there's a corgi guy involved.

Its my understanding that, at present, a RGI can self certify>

as of april next year he will have to be Part L compliant and possible part P (still waiting for the IOP, ECA, Corgi and uncle tom cobblies cat to get back to me on that)

But sure one of the learned chaps here will put me right

Corgiman is right the RGI can self-certify, that's the point, he can certify his own work, but not work done by someone else.

The main requirements for building control approval are:

Fully pumped system.
Pipes insulated, except CH pipes within the heated space.
TRV on all rads except the one where the room stat is.
Boiler interlocked to come on only when the HW or CH stat demands.
If it's a sealed system, you need to set it up properly, pressure, fillig loop etc.

The size of radiators, position, etc, they won't worry about.

Thanks for the advice, heard from building control guy by email and your right they don't sound interested, looks like they leave it up to the Corgi person to certify.

Thanks for clarifying as it has been worrying me.

Building control might not be interested, but if you want to sell your house you might be. As I understand it, advice from the law society to soliciters is that they should not do any conveyancing unless certificates are available for work carried out since April 2002.

As Corgi guys can certify only work they did, if you want a certificate, the building control office should do it. If they don't want to do it, write to the nice Mr. Prescott and ask him if the BC people should be interested. (You might even win a free Jag)

Free Jag sounds good! You made a good point. The reason for me asking both the forum and subsequently building control was because I am concerned about reselling and having the right paperwork.

My sister in law is a legal secretary and she processed our last house sale....she asked about the double glazing we had fitted, which was done before 2002.....so we were okay, without paperwork.

I now have emails from our local senior building control person, saying that it's a matter for a Corgi and that they can self-certify. Hopefully these with the installation certificate completed by a Corgi reg' fitter will satisfy future purchasers.

Does anyone know what paperwork/certficate/s a corgi would leave with me after fitting a boiler???

The blue 'Benchmark' installation cert. (Doubles as a service recoed on the back).

You might find someone stupid enough to sign for something he didn't do. I wouldn't. All the responsibility if one of your joints fails and ruins a ceiling etc.

It's building control's job to sign off work YOU have done. You have to pay them, and I don't care what the senior building control guy says, if you write to the ODPM, they will ensure he will have loads of time to spend with his family. I know of a case where this happened.
