Our house is oil fired to heat radiators and hot water on the same system, i. e. we cannot heat the radiatos on their own without heating the hot water tank at the same time.

Our current timer clock is the one where we have to push pins in to set when the boiler comes on and turns off.

I would like to change rhe timer system for one with an LCD screen. Is there anything I should be aware of or consider when making a choice?

Only that the contacts will be suitable for the load you will be applying to it.

1. Whether or not you can do what you want depends on the type of system you have. If its gravity hot water and pumped central heating you may need to change to a C plan system with a motorised valve.
2. If the timer is built into the boiler, you will probably need to set that programmer / timer to be permanently on and wire the new system appropriately to the boiler.
3. Unless you are very confident and competent it would be much safer to leave it to a professional.

It sounds as if you may have a gravity hot water and pumped C/H system.
Even though the system is considered outdated, there are some modern controllers that support a gravity mode i.e. A hive dual channel thermostat.

If you can give us some more details about your system, and post some pictures of your existing programmer/timer, we may be able to make some further suggestions.
