changing a normal switch to dimmer

I want to change a double light switch contolling two different sets of lights to a dimmer. Is there a specific dimmer i need to buy to do this job. any tips on how this would be wired would be appreciated.

Providing the dimmer switch is rated large enough to run both fittings then no problems

Assuming you are running a new 3 x 50w halogen fitting from each switch. Then the power rating of the switch should be no less than a 2 gang 150w max fitting. Follow the link below for an example

If you are using metal fittings make sure they are adequately earthed.

sorry that advice is not right

assuming there are 2 x 150w halogen lights, the dimmers required must be able to carry 300w EACH as dimmers must be downrated bt 50% when using halogen lamps

Good advice in the absence of any other info, but dimmer manufacturers are catching on to the concept of halogen lighting, and are starting to design and rate their products accordingly.

Don't necessarily assume that an x00W dimmer can only handle x00/2W of lighting - check what the instructions say. If they don't say owt then go with a 50% ROT.

Or go for a better product - some (e.g. MK) have specific features aimed at making them suitable for halogens.
