Hi I wonder if anyone can tell me if this can be done;

Downstairs - I have a single switch near the front door which operates the downstairs hall light. On the other side I have a double switch which operates the downstairs hall light (two way switching) and upstairs hall light.

Upstairs I has a single switch which operates the upstairs hall light only.

I’d like to add a double switch so I can operate the downstairs hall light as well. Can this be done?

The common position is double switch top and bottom but this has the complication of the single switch near the front door.

Thanks for any help.

You will probably need to introduce an intermediate switch into the circuit.

Have a look at this part of Wiki.

How to rewire will depend on the current set up so you also need to establish:

How many cables/conductors go into the front door switch - ideally 1 cable 3 conductors - note their colours and layout C L1 and L2

how many cables/conductors go into the upstairs switch - again ideally 1 cable 3 conductors - note their colours and layout C L1 and L2

How many cables/conductors go into the first gang of the hallway switch that operates the downstairs light - note their colours and layout C L1 and L2.

And similarly for the second gang of the hallway switch that operates the upstairs light - note their colours and layout C L1 and L2

I need to check the wires but think downstairs front door has 3 and upstairs only two. The upstairs will need to be replaced and new cables up to it. I think the far hall switch is intermediate.

Many thanks for your help.
