We have just bought an ME100/4HT Humidity Model Extractor fan as our old one was making a terrible noise when it came on. The seller told us this is exactly the same as our old model but different make.

I asked on this site last night how to wire it back up as we could not get the fan to work. We have coming out of the ceiling a grey, black and brown.

It was suggested black to neutral, brown to live and grey to switched live. If that didn't work change the black and grey round. We have tried everything even a new fan just in case the other one was faulty but still nothing. The fan will not come on at all.

The only thing we have not tried is the brown wire in the neutral, should we do this?

It was suggested black to neutral,
I think that is what you said you had done - not suggested.

It should have worked, either permanently on or on with the light.

I think you may have a fused connector somewhere which may have blown - on the wall outside the bathroom?

Have you a light fitting which you could connect to the wires?

Its all getting a bit technical for us I think we will have to get an Electrician in. Thank you for your help.

I don't suppose you thought to make a note of what wire went to which connection, on the old fan?

PS It would have been more helpful if you had ADDED this to the original thread, rather than start a new one.

EDIT

I have just hunted for, and found your original topic.. As I say, not helpful...

Here's something you can try. Turn off power. Unscrew the front of the fan isolator switch. Have a peek inside.
There may be several cables in there but theere should be a single cable coming from the switch and going to the fan. Probably connected on to the botom of the switch. It will have three wires. Brown, grey and black.

Tell me what terminals the wires are connected to. They should be marked L1, L2 and N. That will tell us which wire is which.

If you aren't sure, take a picture and post it on here. How to do it is shown here //www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=129539

Ok will do tomorrow, thanks for your help.

In both your posts you seem to have failed answering a particular question.

Is there a fan isolator or fused spur unit somewhere??

This could be situated near the fan, outside the bathroom door or in a nearby cupboard.

This could be switched off, or if it has a fuse the fuse may need replacing. Inside it could also help you establish which wire is which.

Not sure exactly what the old fan was. Could it have been SELV 12 volt? If it was there may be a transformer/controller hidden somewhere.

The old fan was a Greenwood Airvac AXS100SVIHT 12v-50Hz 20w. There is a switch outside the bathroom above the door and a box on the other side in the bathroom.

And the brown/black/grey wire that you are trying to connect. Is this at the (transformer) box, or at the fan?

Is the new fan also a 12v one?

We need some pictures.

The new fan is a Mentis ME100/4HT 220-240 50 Hz 20w. We are trying to connect to the new fan not transformer.

But your old fan is a 12v fan
The new one is a 230V one

No wonder it does not work!

So how can that dumbo in the shop have told you that
The seller told us this is exactly the same as our old model but different make.

You've got the wrong fan

You need a 12v fan, and you'll need to change the transformer and the fan.

Suggest you go buy a new 12v AXS100SVIHT they are still available.

If we buy the same fan we had before, why will we have to change the transformer?

If it's exactly the same, and the transformer isn't knackered, you won't have to change it.

It'll either be the fan itself or transformer that is faulty.
Unless of course your random attempts at guessing the wiring have ensured both items are now damaged.

May pay to (get someone to) change both.

The old fan was working but making a high pitched noise, so as you say if we havn't knackered the transformer it should still work with exactly the same fan. I think we will put the old one back just to see if the transformer is still working ok, if so we will opt for exactly the same fan.

Thankyou
