Hi all, any help, advice and pointers from anyone will be appreciated.Im renovating an old house and Im needing to replace 4 doors, all different sizes. To make a good job of it im wanting to replace not only the doors but the frames as well. Some of the current frames are in bad condition, lots of old screw holes and gaps where previous hinges have sat.

My questions are:

When putting in a new door frame is it best to buy a frame with the recess for the door shaped out already or is it easier to build the frame recess up afterwards?

should i measure up for doors after fitting my framework?

if i was to call in a professional to make my life easier how much should i expect to pay, per door? ( would just be looking for them to fit frames and hand a door, the furniture and would surround i would do myself to save cost )

Any pointer from peolpe with experience in this area is greatly appreciated.

thanks

i always tend to use the rebated casings (linings).

imperial doors tend to be 6'-6" tall, and a majority are 2'-6" wide, though 2'-3" and 2'-9" wide doors are available as standard.

i would fit my casings to suit the above dimensions.

casing profile widths vary too, as not all walls are the same thickness.

4-1/4", 5-1/4" and 5-3/4" are all available off the shelf. these are designed for stud walls of varying thickness and of course a modern dabbed 100mm masonry wall.

the thickness of the masonry, PLUS any pipework or electrical backboxes, or any other items that may influence the final plaster thickness, needs to be accounted for when choosing the right casing profile.
