Hi im changing an old switch for a chrome new one the old switch had 2 red wires going to L1 and a cross symbol I think means coms? The new switch has L at the top and L1 L2 at the bottom where do the red wires go from old to new? I was thinking the L1 in old switch to L in new switch and the red wire from com in old switch to L1 in new switch leaving L2 empty?

The new metal switches must be earthed.
If there is no earth wire then you should not fit metal switch plates.
If there is an earth wire then you must make sure it is connected to earth.
