I'd like to add an extra light in our lounge.

I have an existing single switch which I'd like to swap for a double so am I ok in running an extra switched live conductor down the existing channel in the wall and using this plus the neutral and earth from the other light fitting?

I don't think I could get a 2 core cable down the channel so is it acceptable to use a single core red wire?

If not can someone advice what the best method is?

Someone who knows a bit more about it will probably be along soon, but I would consider replacing the 2 core + earth drop to the switch with a 3 core + earth rather than running a single wire.

Yes i would agree with tickly T , Replace your existing switch cable (2core and earth) with a three core and earth cable. Then run a twin and earth cable from your first light to your new proposed light then you would pick up your neutral and earth from your existing light position and you would simply have to join the new live core from your switch to your new live core to the new light inside your first ceiling rose.
