HI everyone,

In my downstairs and upstairs hallway, each floor has a light switch that operates both the upstairs lights and the downstairs lights. If I want to change it so the upstairs switch only turns on the upstairs lights, etc, is it just a case of removing the approrite wires, or is there an extra precaution or set of steps I need to take?

Thanks!

Depends how it is wired.

However, normally the upstairs light is operated from both so that you can turn it off after going up or down, and
the downstairs is only operated from downstairs.

So it looks like someone has altered it to be like it is now so probably reversible.

This shows the standard wiring, there are variations, but this means you have a master and slave switch and the master easy to replace with on/off, but since the slave work through the master, unlikely the wiring can be used to work a different lamp set.

So easy way, two TP-Link (Tapo) smart bulbs, and two push buttons and a hub, so the existing switches simply left on, and new switches

work the lights. Easier than pulling new wires to switch.

I've not yet detached the switches, but will take some pictures when I do. Thanks!

Unfortunately, the smart bulbs aren't an option for me. After years of Phillips hue, I don't want to have lights continuously on drawing power, however small. I'm going the next best route and installing tapo switches all over the house, but first I need to get rid of this two way switch setup as it turns the entire house into a giant light box
