Hi,

I know its a bit of a cheeky question but given the fact that we live in the middle of nowhere and getting any advice by a tradesman is seemingly impossible, I think you may be my only hope.

I need to get 3 things done to my roof....
1. repointing the chimney stack, small area maybe 1 sq mtr.
2. 12 or so slates missing or damaged need repairing, I have enough to do this, and
3. approx 20 meters of lead flashing along the ridges to be replaced, including straps and nails.

1 days work in total.

2 guys have already quoted me but I cant get anyone else round to quote, I keep getting let down by the 2 or 3 in my area (caithness)

Basically I want to know if their quote sounds reasonable...£1250??

Any help would me much appreciated. I know I shouldnt really ask for this advice but your my last hope I think.

Thanks.

Well, I has a scaffolding put up to 2 chimney level last week and that cost £420 up to 28 days to give you some idea and that was a bungalow.

What you will find from someone who also lives in a small community is that they see you as a stupid blown in money pitt, and they will work together so you have no choice but to use them and accept their quotes workmanship ( if they have any ) and when they feel like doing the job.

The best thing you can do is get someone from outside the area and pay them the same money because that is how you locals would have priced the job anyway, and then you would have shown the locals that you are not the kind of person who would take any old crap and you dont need to rely on them.

You will find the next time you need a job doing, they either wont come or will be more obliging, but to use them now would possibly be an expensive mistake.

Strange...didn`t work like that in my village...and I still get called back...but then I`m a soft Rich Southerner :) Retired Plumber

Yeah but do you live somewhere like Caithness where everybody has a banjo?? :D

You're spot on Freddie, they all know each other and because we are from the South where according to the locals round here anyone from the South has a bottomless pit of money.

Good suggestion, i'll use someone from outside the area and you're right about the banjo players too!

Best of luck mate -----i find if you just bother with other blow ins and ignore the inbreds it dont half get up their nose----but its their own ferkin fault for being a bunch of clever dick arseholes :)
