Hi, I hope someone out there can help me. I had a gas fire removed and now have an hole in the wall! I do not want to put another fireplace in and would like to put shelves inside the breast instead. I have no clue as to where to start with such a project. Any advice?

There are literally loads of different shelves and brackets out there - best nip down to B&Q, Wickes or somewhere and see what they've got. At least you should have sound brickwork in there so fixing won't be a problem. You may like to consider having the recess skimmed with plaster first though, and closing off the hole where the flue went with a 'register plate'. Cheers John

Hi, thanks. Sorry I should have said that I don't know how to prepare the chimney breast for the installation of the shelves. The opening in the front is not very large so I will have to widen it, and that is what I need advice about.

You can knock out some of the brickwork and take it back to the builders opening.
