Hi,

Having removed an old gas fire and marble firpelace in a 1950’s semi detached as part of our current renovation and have come across a steel ‘lintel’ across the opening. (Steel is 600mm wide, chimney breast is 1320mm)

Having removed the fire board in the fireplace and found an actionable 150mm of depth to the original back of the fireplace, it appears the steel is supported by a course of loose bricks and infill on either side and nothing else.

Above the steel is a course of bricks spanning the width of the chimney.

My question is, is this this a load bearing lintel or one just use to create the space for the fire that was installed previously?

OP,
Whats your intention with this fireplace & chimney breast?
If you remove a little plaster, in a line going up from the centre of the opening you might reveal an original brick arch?
If you find an arch then remove all the plaster from the arch bricks & post a pic.

There's normally two supports in a fireplace - that one for the opening, and the structural one further up.
