Hi,

I live in an old house with big thick outside walls, 2 up 2 down style, and each room had a fireplace.

In the back downstairs room (kitchen) there is no chimney breast but there is upstairs ! I assume there is a beam supporting it.

I would like to make the bedroom bigger so would like to remove the chimney breast in there.

What kind of arrangements must I make in the loft to support the rest of the chimney? Downstairs its about 6 feet wide and about 3 feet in the loft. The front chimney is still in use as a flue for a gas fire.

Cheers

David

it will largely depend on the flue masonry arrangement in the loft space.

gallows brackets with steel beam is the norm. or if you have no neighbouring stack, remove the lot, right to the pot.
