Chimney Brest/Fire Place Renovation

Hello again...!

3rd project of the day... My Chimney brest has a 'shelf' built in about 1/3rd of the way down from the ceiling:

Looks a bit like that - trouble is I'm not overly keen on it and would like to remove IF it isn't going to be a major headache - ie will cause structural problems.

Also, I need to make the fire place hole wider, taller and deeper, and have been told this is fairly simple - I'm just paranoid about the stack falling in...a little reassurance?!

Its a structural item, all chimneys are. If you intend to make the opening larger then removing the step should be too much hassle. You'll need a new lintel over the new opening etc
