Hi,

I need to cap a couple of chimney pots.

One is just a straight tube so one of these clip of plastic caps would do but they seem ridiculously expensive. The only place I've found on the net that sells them wants almost 20 quid! For plastic lid  Anyone suggest a cheaper supplier? B&Q et. al. don't seem to have them nor builders merchants.

The other pot is a tall aerodynamic shape with a gap at normal pot height. To cap this is a bit more tricky as just capping the top would leave too large gap just for ventilation. Any suggestions?

Looking around I see I have some sheet copper, 300x300x0.45, which I could use to make a cap. Take a circle, cut the radius, overlap to give cone shape for drainage. The tricky pot would have to done in two halves to get it into the gap area of the pot as it would need to clear the supports.

Lead I guess is another option although I don't think I have any of that around. Easier to work on the roof though.

One more question. What is the recommended ventilation area? At the top and at the bottom.

I don't know if this is a useless advice I'm giving you, it maybe best to pay a little bit more for the correct fitting of these chimney cap. I was thinking if the high wind knock off a home made chimney cap and hurt anybody I wondered could you be liable for damage.

Give them a ring for a best advice, I would say more the better !

Also do everything safely when working on roof.
