Hello, I accidentally pressed the orange test button on the Chint NL1 circuit breaker, and the master switch jumped to off. Now I can't get it to stay on, even though all the individual fuse switches are on and have not tripped. Any ideas why? Is there a time delay? Or have I caused a problem by pushing the test button?
Thanks for any help.
PS in case you can't tell, I know nothing of electrics!

when you say Master Switch, you must mean RCD. A switch does not trip. It is correct to press the Test button periodically to see if the RCD is working. Quarterly is typical. Is the NL1 your main switch?

Chint is towards the lower-quality end of cheap tat.

It may help to switch to fully off then back to fully on.

Can you post photos?

How long has it been installed, and who by? When did it last work correctly when tested?

Yes, I do mean the RCD. It's a rented house, been here 6 months. It used to be two flats, so there is a separate board for upstairs and down stairs. It's the upstairs board with the problem.
Background: A fuse blew downstairs this evening. I unplugged the offending appliance (a lamp) and reset the switch on the downstairs board - all ok. However, while I was down there I pushed the test button on the other board - that looks after the upstairs circuit. The switch went to 'off' and now it won't go back to on. So downstairs electrics are fine, but nothing upstairs.
I've attached photos of both boards if it helps - top pic is the problem one.
Thanks a lot

turn off all the MCBs for a start. The red indicators should go, and green may appear.

I notice that the Red indicator is showing on the Chint RCD although the switch lever is in the Off position. This suggests it is faulty. The indicator should be green when off.

The Chint part is not the same manufacturer as the other devices in the CU. It might have been fitted by some penny-pinching bodger. Could the Test button be stuck in?

Are you a tenant or the landlord?

Have just tried switching all the MCBs off, but the RCD still won't stay on 'on'. The indicator goes green for a nanosecond, but then back to red. From what you've said it sounds like it might be broken. Thanks

Turn off and unplug everything that you can on those circuits. If it still won't reset, it's time to phone the landlord!
