I have had my windows replaced and asked for the architraves to be timber as I was quite happy to replace several simple blind and pole curtain fittings myself. On ascending the ladder with the correct drill bit fitted I found that the 'timber' is actually chipboard:mad:. I have sent them a grumpy email but can chipboard be drilled or not and what with? Am I going to have to pay someone to do this for me?

Thanks for any advice.

Wood or metal drill will go through chipboard.
Chipboard screws are normally coarse thread although most screws will be ok.

The architrave is chipboard? Not MDF? Have you a picture

I used a normal wood drill bit but it barely made a dent. Should I try and drill the screw straight into to the chipboard without making a hole first? Use a hammer drill?

That's MDF not chipboard, completely different beasts when used for architraves and the like. Technically MDF is not timber though is formed with wood fibers. Anyway a sharp wood bit will easily drill into MDF.
