Choc blocks behind a light fitting

I'm looking to replace a downstairs light fitting (GU10 spots rather than a pendant). It's been in place for 15 years since we moved into the house, and I've never taken it down before. I've discovered that in the absence of a proper junction box, everything seems to be held together by separate and different choc blocks stuffed halfway into the ceiling. I realise asking for opinions on the internet is generally dangerous, but would be grateful for thoughts on where this falls on the scale between "absolutely fine" and "good grief, run away". It's been like that for 15 years so presumably can't be a guaranteed deathtrap, but equally it feels like Wagos might be neater than three wires into a single side of the black choc block, etc. But then it's not accessible, which I think has a bearing on whether everything should be in a proper junction box anyway. Am I over-thinking this?! Cheers!

Black choc block has three red wires going into one side of it. Two white choc blocks have one connection in each side. Earth disappears into the ceiling, to who-knows-where.

You need a downlight jb and, if you are keeping the old down lights a new lamp holder for each the led
It works like a ceiling rose, power in and out for the radial/daisy chain, and power to the led, three reds. SF do a cheap Luceco lamp holder(3751H) and the hager lighting junction box 8423F). They will house the wagos and meet any maintenance free requirements if properly installed.

Just connect your new fitting L, N & E to the same wires from the ceiling as they are now.

Yes. Shame the wires don’t appear to be inside it!

You could junction them in their (if they are ). Put a metal plate over it and a skim of plaster. (Ideally leaving the 2 screws just about visable

Thanks - not downlights though, just four GU10s attached to a square base which then mounts to the silver bracket.
The 'black thing' buried in the ceiling looks likes a conduit BESA box to me?
Yeah, they're throughout the house and every single one is empty, with the current cables just shoved through a hole down the side. It's a right pain for the lights with a ceiling rose because it leaves a gaping void next to each one.

Sounds like I can get away with just replacing the fitting then, and leaving everything as it is. Thanks all!

When I swapped the overhead light in my 1980’s extension for another, the wires were just twisted together and wrapped in tape. Can’t believe that a pro did that?
