Need to buy a stainless steel splashback for a new range cooker.

I just bought the hood from Britannia (for £260 - and seems very good) and noticed that their S/S splashbacks are about £300! However, you can get a S/S splashback from Screwfix for £55 (http://www.screwfix.com/p/stainless-steel-splashback-750-x-900mm/33517).

£300 seems a bit insane for a bit of steel, so I'm inclined to go with the cheaper option. Is there some unknown quality factor at work here? Or just 'branding'?

Have you had one before? My advice is don't bother, they are an absolute nightmare to keep clean & looking good. We bought a £3k professional stainless steell range cooker package a few years ago which included an extract hood & splash back. We only had the splash back up for a couple months & my wife got so fed up with trying to keep it clean & streak free we sold it & I tiled the splash back to match the rest of the kitchen.

The hood & cooker remain but are also difficult to keep looking good & I would never, ever buy SS again.

No, never had one before... interesting what you say. We already have the cooker and hood - can't take those back now. But maybe we should opt for tiles rather than the splashback...

I would definitely go for tiles & its what I always advise customers; the cooker topsides, doors & the hood ducting are bad enough but the splash back & underside of the hood are in direct line of fire. The problem is not so much keeping it clean but streak free, we’ve tried practically every specialist cleaner on the market including oiling (which just ends up a sticky mess) & none really work. The wife now uses a degreaser/cleaner first & then just ordinary window cleaner to get rid of the marks but it’s still a pain getting it streak free.
