I am having an extension built and I was wondering what wood i should use or avoid for the cladding? My builder suggested to use Canadian red cedar and I got a sample. It looks beautiful but it is a bit brittle. I would be grateful for your advice
Cedar is durable and stable, it's one of the more 'idiot proof' timbers to use for cladding.
It is soft, but for most buildings that's fine (some public sector buildings don't like it as they are more abused, but it's perfect for domestic use).
If you leave it to weather it has to be evenly exposed, the picture you show as an example is typical of how not to let it weather, as lots of it is shaded it will start to look a mess unless it has a finish which is well maintained.
