Hi. I\\\'ve moved into a house that has parquet flooring. I needed to clean it ans sought advice from Homebase. The manager recommended methylated spirit rubbbed on with the rough end of a sponge (used for washing up dishes). Well... its dulled the floor (disaster)and lightened the colour (this I can live with.
Can you tell me if methlated spirit is ever recommneded for parquet flooring, and what I can do to return the flooring to how it was originally (or better). Thank you - I am panicking  !

Hi Peg
Nothing to worry about, the spirit just has cleaned off the dirt and the wax. Apply a new maintenance layer (hard wax or wax polish) and your floor might 'sparkle' again.

Thank you so much for the reassuring news.
What I'm planning to do now is clean the rest of the floor with a cleaner specifically made for parquet flooring, then wax it as you suggested. Can you recommend a good cleaner?

I'm curious - have you heard of anyone else cleaning with methylated spirit and what was the outcome.

Thanks again!

it's best to use the same brand wax (waxpolish) as the cleaner, normally they are 'linked' together.
We often clean old waxed floors with spirit, so there you go ;) After applying a new maintenance layer the floor normally looks brand new again
