Cleaning oiled floor with methylated spirits?

Hey everyone
Is it ok to clean an oiled floor with methylated spirits before applying and maintenance coat of oil? or does anyone here know of a better way to clean and degrease the surface. all yelp appreciated.

Why would you clean your floor with spirits first and then apply maintenance oil? Is it so dirty?
 
it's pretty bad, I cleaned it with a lightly dampened mop but it made no difference, there's a lot of marks that look like sand dust that haven't budged, I also read that you should get rid of any surface grease before applying the maintenance oil.

Before I re-oil our solid oak kitchen worktops I always wipe the surface with methylated spirits, amazing what comes off.
