Cleaning stone floor

Hi all, Anyone any good ideas how to clean what appear to be yorkshire stone flags in the kitchen of a house we've bought. The room was newly plastered and the floor not covered so it's full of dried plaster etc.
Acid ? Scrub hard with soapy water ?
