I normally use throw away brushes to apply Dulux weathershield primer. It ruins your brushes.

Working at home today, I only had Purdy brushes with me. Half way through priming a fascia and a barge board, the new brush started to stiffen as the primer started drying. Washing the brush in water had no effect, so, thinking I had nothing to lose, I dropped the brush in a pot of cellulose...

Minutes later the brush was as good as new.

Used to use cellulose thinners in my brushmate vapour box, cheaper than brushmate fluid and works the same, it does evaporate at a slightly quicker rate though.
To soften brushes at the end of the day put half a cup of fabric conditioner in a 2.5 litre kettle filled with warm water and soak the brush over night, puts the bounce back in the brush.

I had never thought of using cellulose in my brushmate. I might give it a try. Thanks

5L of XXX cellulose from Morrells is about 10 times cheaper than the brushmate liquid.
