Put some clematis in to grow over a large pergola I built.
Bought them from Wilkinsons and they were about 15" tall.
A week later they are all drooping and dying :(
Any suggestions?
Cheers

Tip is to plant them with the base of the plant and the roots away from strong light and direct sunlight.
I planted some and then covered the base with a large rock and they flourished.
Try googling your topic

Were these 'Montana' type clematis which most people use to cover a large area quite quickly? In my experience these are extremely tough. Did you follow the planting instructions on the pot?. Normally it is best to plant the clematis a few inches away from the structure it is to climb over and about 3 to 4 inches deeper in the ground than it was in the pot. I would also cut back a lot of the existing growth to where you can see two healthy buds. The clematis should soon pickup and show new growth from where it has been cut back to and also from the base.

Clematis can also suffer from something called 'Clematis Wilt' which can knock a beautiful fully grown plant back to nothing overnight. The only cure I use for this is again to cut back the growth, but to the ground, new growth will soon come back from the base of the plant.

I assume that you have watered them, you could also try giving them a bit of a feed, they would probably appreciate it (I use good old Miraclegrow).

Hope this helps.

If they've gone down as quickly as that you've maybe damaged the stems. It's easily done on young clematis. They should come away from the base so just give them a few weeks. The other thing to check is that you've completely covered the original compost with soil. If not the compost can dry out quickly and clematis don't like to be dry.

Taw I am a nurseryman and i suggest you dig them all up, put them in a bucket and take them back to Wilkinsons.

They have clearly succumbed to 'Clematis Wilt'.

If they don't have your money there for you. just repeat 'Clematis Wilt' until they do.

Clematis need to be planted at least 6 inches below the position of the container in which they were purchased. They hate sunlight hitting their roots. A generous mulch is also in order. I.e. gravel or bark chippings.
