Close coupled toilet

I have fitted a cc toilet in my mothers house-the cistern split last week.I have worked out that there is no leak from the cistern to the pan from the syphon nut.There is a small escape upon flushing to the left hand side.The cistern is level horizontally.I replaced the grommet supplied with a superior larger rubber doughnut as it is a basic model with defective fittings.

The escape is marginal but to placate mum do I need to tighten the left hand wing nut and secondly was I right to place the FLAT side of the grommet downwards?

On the pan was there a circular recess ? if so, the dounut is upside down.
