Clunking noise when I release the Clutch Pedal?

Hi all.

I have a 1997 Ford Escort Estate and my problem is a strange clunking noise when I depress or release the Clutch. The noise sounds like a drive shaft disengaging and then engaging again, like you get on a worn drive shaft when turning full lock. I can create the problem by slowly releasing the clutch in 2nd Gear, as the bite comes into play the noise appears and it feels as if something is banging under the Drivers footwell. I have looked underneath whilst the Clutch is operated but I can't see anything.

Has anybody come across this problem or can shed some light on it for me?

Many thanks.

Steve.

More than likely its a worn cv joint on the end of the nearside driveshaft.
Usually they show themselves up by knocking like hell when you drive on full steering lock.
Sound about right?

Thanks Burnerman.

I don't think thats the problem because it never does it whilst turning just on the straight when changing Gear, mainly 2nd. A friend has suggested that it may be an Engine or Gearbox Mounting.

Cheers Guys. I will keep you posted.

OK and fair enough...the engine is mounted on rubber blocks, and if these have split or are otherwise damaged the engine can move about more than is intended. This can cause metal to metal contact - often the exhaust is to blame.
