hiya everyone, i've recently moved into my girlfriends house and the house seemed to warm up fine with the coal fired boiler, but since i've shut the water off and fitted a new shower the radiators don't seem to do anything, i have bled them multiple times but still the same, for some reason the upstairs bedroom radiators seem to drain quicker than they fill drawing in air?? so i have to partially shut the return flow down to fill the rads.

not knowing anything about the systems has left me abit confused, according to form its just basic system, no electric thermostats, just the tanks boiler and the pump? the pipes going too and from the boiler don't seem to be getting warm at all which is confusing me? any hep is greatly appreciated!

Check that the small head tank in the loft is about 1/3 full of water and that the ball valve is not stuck

just been up and checked, level is 1/3rd if not greater, ball valve is in working order

The fact that air is being drawn in trough the air vents in the upstair rads indicate that the system is lacking water, which is fed via the small head tank. It seems that you have partly drained the heating system when you fitted the shower but how? It seems that the feed from the head tank is blocked.

thats what i cant understand, everything drained and refilled as per the norm. its confusing me no end

One wonders why fitting a shower required draining the heating circuit.

I always advise NOT doing DIY in a girlfriends house because if anything goes wrong then you may end up with a big bill for damage caused and lose a girlfriend.

Better to let a professional do it for you.

Cheers Agile, Happy Christmas.

To fit the shower i just turned off the supply to the shower, but since that time we had problems with the heating. then i drained and filled as per the instructions she was left with when the heating system was fitted to make sure there was no air in. dont worry about losing her, lol might aswell be wed off now! i cant escape!

its just extremely baffling, i work with hydraulic systems upto 6000PSI with multiple cooling cuircuits and valves. this has to be a simple fault

Draining will just make it worse if the problem is air in the system.

If the feed pipe is blocked as we speculate then you MIGHT be able to do a temporary repair by pouring water DOWN the vent pipe. That usually means cutting it, pouring and then joining with a coupler.

The cut should be made ABOVE the level in the header tank and the pouring done with the pump OFF!
