Dont't know quite where to post so hopefully here doesn't offend anyone.

My house seems to be colder than any other i visit and have come to the conclusion I must spend some money to improve it as it simply isn't enjoyable in the winter.

The house is a standard looking double skin brick built 4 bed 1970's detached which is sheltered on all four sides and has tile pitched roof along with 3 sections of flat roof single storey extensions. footprint is about 24' x 26'.
all rooms have single skin rads except front porch and upstairs landing. front porch has a door leading to the semi integral garage. the bathroom is above the part of the garage which is integral and it is not insulated between garage and bathroom. Loft has minimal insulation about 2-3" at most.
Heating boiler has been replaced in the last two years and all rads are too hot to touch for long while the heating is on and each has a thermostat valve on it which are set to max. the rads in the kitchen and downstairs hall have radiator covers on them. Currently have the heating set for two hours in the morning and 4-5 hours at night.
Some rooms have curtains some have roller blinds, none have nets.
The intenral walls of the house are cold to the touch, and through keeping doors shut and then checking temperatures I haven't concluded any noticeably colder rooms than others, apart from the bathroom and porch

The question I have is where to spend money to give maximum result:-

1] upgrade rads to bigger or double skin
2] insulate the loft
3] insulate the garage to bathroom floor
4] have heating on longer, currently paying £100 per month for gas for heating and hob in kitchen.

Any thoughts or personal experience on this would be much appreciated, sorry for the the lengthy post, points if you made it to the end!!

The cheapest starting point would be insulation. It should be brought up to current standards irrespective of any heating system. Start with that and see if there's any improvement. Do a rad size calc for all your rooms and check your rads are sized correctly.

Insulate, draughtproof, service boiler, balance rads, blah di blah.

Go from there.

Cavity wall insulation and 350 mm of loft insulation will work wonders!

Some very good deals at the moment!

You'll be able to get very cheap or free loft and cavity wall insulation start with that. British gas and a number of other contractors do it.
Got my loft done for free.

Then look at the wicks room size radiator calculator.

Once insulation is in you may find the radiators are up to the job.

I'm going to insulate the loft and board the bits I need done over Christmas. I have done three of the rooms using the calculator and it seems the rads are ok as they are so that is a relief, thanks to all for the links and advice.

I am also intrigued as to whether I am being a Scrooge on the heating. The boiler is set to cut out at 65.c and it is currently set to be on 5.30-7.30 in the morning and then 4.30-8.30 in the evening. What does everybody else do?

I will look into cavity wall insulation as well, I think I've put off looking into these free offers as I am just naturally sceptical of them, are there no catches with it, is the quality of work as good as if u actually paid for it?

Thanks again

you are being a bit of a scrooge yes, turn the flow temp up a bit. run the heating for longer..

its harder to heat a cold building you know.

I have put the temperature upto 77', does that sound right and have also put it on for 3 hours in the morning and 5 at night.

Thanks for the feedback
