Ok here is my problem. In my appartment building I have a steam boiling system. It's a Weil- McLain LGB-21-5 It's
big and old,
The unit runs well at 3kps. The building has 68 units and 2 to 4 rads per place.
But when the boiler runs the left side of the building has no problems.
The rads get so hot people have to open the windows. The right ride is ok until you get to the front of
the building . Unit
12-13
112-113
212-213
312-313
412-413

all have no heat all all going to the kitchen/living room. BUT are hot in the bedroom and bath.
BUT
If were to leave the boiler running full tilt it gets warm/hot after a day or so but dosent last unless
the boiler runs FULL OUT. I can not afford to pay 8000 a month in heating bills like last year so it's
time to fix this problem. I had a tennant in 412 that tried to disconnect the rad in the living room this past
summer to sand blast it without my permission. She just moved out. So this year when i turned the boiler
on and walked through the building i heard cold air hissing from the rad so in order to fix it I took it off on one end and
cleaned the thread, while it was dissconnected I heard hissing air I dont know if it was pulling air in or pushing out
but I tightened the pipe. I dont know
exactly how to bleed the system of air. Or if you even have to with a 2 pipe steam system.
I called in a company to
take a look they told me if I were to try and clean out the pipes with solution it might clog somewhere else.
Is this true? Also if someone can recomend a cleaner for these pipes. that guy who came last time charged me 100
to tell me nothing.
I also seen a trap like thing in the basement in appt 13 under the kitchen but I had no luck removing the cap. I might
want to check with someone before I do anyway.

So any advice would be GREAT. Thank-you

if your system is under pressure you aint gonna get cold air out of a rad
i would say you have a blocked condensate trap somewhere
hence the cold spots would be looking for a trap near cold rads
btw uk forum we dont have steam heating here :D

Ok If I do have a blocked condensate trap how can I locate it? Im not exactly sure what a condensate trap is. But I know at the bottom of the line in appt 13 there is a trap like thing.

will be on a low point in the system
be fair buddy im on the other side of the pond
just happen to have done a bit of steam we dont use it for heating here
good luck
if you are stuck try another post
we try to help if we can :D

HEY Thanks man..
I found the trap and I opend the bleeder screw, then I opend this shut off near it and gross oil type stuff started poring out. before I knew it water then HOT HOT STEAM.
I closed it all up and the system has never ran so good.
I found out why it got plugged. Because I evected the tennant from 412 she opend the rad system and pored paint or paint thinner in the one. The other one she used rice and beans, the other one had a chunk of bamboo. Those lines are all still plugged but tomorrow morning I will start changing pipes. 312 works all round so I know if I change the pipes I will get steam. Now it's time to track down that tennant and..... well.... well see.. :)
Thanks for the help. I'll let you know how it goes
THANKS AGAIN
