apologies if this has been asked before but I haven't been able to find an answer using the search ..

My house has all the cold taps supplied direct from the mains. No problem until you put mixer taps on, which I've now done, and then you can't really get a sensible controlled temperature out of them, as the cold pressure is ~5bar and the maximum hot pressure is about 1 bar downstairs.

My question is - is it legal and possible to fit a new cold supply to the main storage tank in the loft and then shift what was the mains water feed to the tank/taps to be fed from the cold header tank and so provide balanced cold (and hot) to all the taps in the house? Hope that makes sense!

Cheers for any advice.

Yes - no problem with this. But you must have a mains fed tap somewhere - historically and practically this is in the kitchen since it is here that you are most likely to drink "wholesome" water from, which shouldn't come from an open tank.

I assume that your hot water is via a cylinder setup. Final thing to be aware of is that some taps are designed for high water pressure (for modern combi and unvented hot water systems), and may not work too well if you revert to a gravity based system.

thanks for the speedy reply dextrous.

I've got a water softener that feed most taps and one unsoftened tap that's teed of before the softener - so I'd keep that one from the mains.

Yes, hot water is from a cylinder all of the mixers have a reasonable flow of hot so I think they will be ok if I feed cold from the tank as well.
