Hi,

I am trying to finish painting my staircases (new and old) and have decided that I would like the handrails to be coloured.

I have some dark brown (Dulux Totally Cocoa) non-drip gloss and would like to use a coloured undercoat.

This is not going to take too much paint and would like to avoid buying a tin of coloured undercoat.

Is it sensible to add some of the brown gloss to my white undercoat (both oil based) to darken the undercoat?

Maybe this is a silly idea!!

use dark grey u/c for dark colours (and light grey for light colours)

white is OK for very pale or bright colours

Thanks JohnD.

No short-cuts for me

Just been out and got some grey undercoat, so my evening is now set up!

The forum is great, thanks to all the experts who keep everyone on the right track

You could of course have a litre mixed up for you in the colour you require, probably a bit dearer than the grey though to be honest.
