Are column radiators much heavier than bog standard steel panels of the same size? would mounting onto plasterboard walls be an issue weight wise?

1. Depends on the radiators. If aluminium, lighter than standard steel, if cast iron heavier than standard steel, if steel depends on construction but likely to be a bit heavier.
2. Mounting on to plasterboard is an issue for any radiator, except tiny ones, but an issue generally understood and reasonably easily overcome. A lot depends on the construction:
2a. Plasterboard on wooden frame - range from plasterboard plugs to "Grip it" fixings, or better still inserted noggins.
2b. "Dot and dabbed" plasterboard - mix of 2a and drilling into substrate and spacing brackets off.
3. You'll probably be OK with 2a or 2b, unless its cast iron. If it is you will almost certainly need support feet to stand on the floor and take most of the weight.

cheers ..I think we have dot and dab boards over solid stone ...
