Whatever the quoted output is.

Will it actually heat anything outside it's radiant radius - eventually. Will it heat anything bigger than the smallest of rooms efficiently - not really or at least certainly not quickly and certainly not as well as an equivalent convecting radiator.

Another option maybe these

Basically just hot water in tubes? No radiant effect?
No - quite the opposite and that's the problem.

Designer columns heat characteristics are around 80% radiation 20% convection - Convecting radiators (Type 11/21/22 (K1/P+/K2) are the opposite - 80% convection 20% radiation.

When it comes to heating the air in a room space, convection is far more efficient/faster at warming the space as opposed to primarily radiant rads unless everything is within say 3ft of the rad.

The rads in your 2nd pic are much better, as they look like Stelrad convectors.

Transfering heat by radiation won't travel for at all?
Not the level of heat that is radiated by those designer columns - their effective range seems to be about 3-4 ft

Specifically designed radiant heaters are a different beast, they are designed specifically to physically project their heat and have a much larger range - like reflectors on the old bar heaters.

True radiant heaters are typically direct heating using infrared heat sources using ceramic/quartz element and are usually electrically powered - they really aren't much different to the old bar heaters they just don't usually use heated wires anymore.

Alternatives are fan assisted but that's another subject

Convection heaters are typically water/oil based and use directed airflow to heat the space, these radiator are the ones with panels and internal fins

The trouble with the new designer column rads is that their design is such that they don't channel/direct the air to any degree therefore the majority of the heat they actually produce is heat that radiates from the meatal surfaces. Don't confuse these new vertical designer types with the heavier traditionally shaped column rads as they have a more effective convection profile given their size and design

Thanks are the new column radiators that look like the old fashioned cast iron ones work ok? Better then the modern style flat panel ones as shown in the first picture

Yes - their heat profile is better - more like 50/50 - as they have a better ability to channel the air and heat it within them given their design shape. Still no where as efficient at heating the air as the standard convecting rads are though (Type 11/21/22). This is all about how quickly the space and therefore the house heats up, the quicker the better (and cheaper)
