combination boiler not firing up (?) - please help

Hello,
Please can someone give me some advice.
I have a Valiant combination boiler, the pilot light is lit but when the hot water or heating is turned on it does not fire up.
I can hear a click when the hot tap is turned on which sounds like it is tring to fire, but this noise cannot be heard when the heating is turned on.
Over the last few months the hot water does not work in the mornings if the heating has not been on for a while.
