A bit of background first:

We have a standard setup for our central heating & hot water. The house dates from 1989. We have the original gas boiler plus pump, motorised valve, tank stat and room stat with a very basic timer to control it all.

On the immersion tank we have a 3kw heater that has a built in stat but which is simply controlled by an on/off switch.

We recently had PV panels installed so naturally in the summer we now want to switch from Gas to Electricity to provide our hot water.

My question really relates to how to set up the timer programming of this in the most effective way.

We certainly need a new timer that is easier to control for the gas part of the system, and naturally need a totally new timer for the immersion. Question is; how to get both in the best way possible.

Any suggestions?

Are you sure you have 3kw on tap from your pv panels? what is your set up do you have the energy stored and then inverted?

I would think a single channell timer for each heat source would be easier for you.

To operate a 3 kW immersion heater from PV panels you would need about 15 m² of panels which would cost a lot!

Fitted for nothing for a council/social housing organisation or tenant!

Be interesting to see how the tenants use free power like this and how much is left to feed back into the grid.

Thanks for the replies.

Yes, we generate an average of about 10 kwh/day at the moment (maxing at about 2kw) and via an inverter either use it or sell it to the grid.

I also thought that two single channel programmers woul dbe the best option but just wanted to check.

...and yes, it did cost a lot, but since we plan to stay here for a long time we do believe it'll be worth it in the end.
