Hi,

I am completely gutting and old stone built cottage. I was considering installing a GSHP. However the estimate cost of £250 and the information I have gathered on here has put me off a little.

I have decided to buy a conventional heating system and spend my money on insulating the house to death!

I have no mains gas, what is recommended?

I have damproofed the stone work with silicone injection and coated with waterproof cement. I have been recommended using a system of attaching polystyrene backed plaster board to the walls using a new metal bracket fixture.
I have never heard of this and I am still tempted to frame the wall with a layer of visquith behind and insulate between the framing with 2" polystyrene. Any advice would be great.....

The current floor is a traditional wooden joist system in need of repair. I have the option of:

1 repairing and isulating.
2. Removing, laying visquith, polystyrene then concreting.
3. Removing, laying visquith, polystyrene then concreting, then joisting and flooring again.
4. What is recommended and is UFH worth considering while I am at this stage even when not going for a GSHP, will it offer a better system than traditional radiators? and what is the best floor configuration if yes is the answer?

Do you mean £2500 for the heat pump system as that is still v cheap. Your alternative is an lpg tank refill;ed every 6 months or so. Gas is alot cheaper than electricity to heat and cook.

UFH takes time to heat up and you have no immeadiate warm rad to stand next to when you come in cold.
Get a heating installer in to advise you on which system suits your house.


In regards to the insulation yes max it up to keep whatever heat you have.
I would use a vapour shield between the wall and the laminate boards (poly stuck to plasterboard).

No, the company wanted a £250 deposit to carry out a site visit and give me a quote for a GSHP..

How does LPG compare with the oil option?

Ah I see if it could work then long term it is the best option with crude oil $100 a barrell and gas up 20% this month.
Factor in North sea gas is depleting and our ex soviet neighbours playing silly buggers with supply to us.
If you are looking long term then has to be a renewable form of energy.
They will be refining a bio oil for home heating soon so the decision is a tough one.
How about solid fuel or wood pellets ?
