What’s the current thinking on this?

Some years back I had Virgin broadband, and it included F-secure free for a year or 2, then they started charging. I paid for a few years but last time I ditched F-secure and installed AVG free version. I never had any contact with F-secure except a prompt for payment, but I regularly get AVG saying they’ve detected something and I should upgrade (for £££). No sign of any issue so I ignore it. Either F-secure were missing things or AVG are trying it on.

What do other users do? I’m on W11 and talktalk broadband. I understand W11 has some malware protection built-in, so wonder whether I need anything extra at all.

If you know how to use the internet properly, then the default Windows Defender should be sufficient.

If you don't want to use that, you can buy antivirus software that includes a firewall.

Avoid clicking on suspicious, repugnant, or meretricious sites, and you shouldn't get viruses.

Out of curiosity, what do you do?

Yes at work where we're (so I'm told) pretty switched on with regards to cyber security etc we just have Windows Defender running locally.

As well as Defender also run Malwarebytes, it detects for things that are not viruses but are equally abhorrent.

So does Windows Defender. I only use Defender now, got fed up paying silly prices for the paid for, so called, virus killers and the freebies weren't apparently, any good so I just stick with Windows Defender which if you do the research these days to all intents and purposes is pretty damn good.

Always had Mac’s, no anti virus and no problems for over 30 years.

You may not have had one but they are not immune from viruses, thinking that they are is a stupid myth.

They are also rare on PC's too, I cannot remember the last time I had one.
They are not rare if your stupid and do not take precautions though.
