Hi, this is my first post so I apologise for the lack of technical jargon. I am in the process of building an ensuite in my bedroom and have a few questions relating to the DPM. When building control came round, they told me that due to the age of the bungalow (1930 – 1940’s) the DPM was on top of concrete floor. In the form of bitumen and red tiles that were hidden under the carpet, which surprised me. In addition I was told that 50% of these red tiles contain asbestos.
The plan was (hopefully still is) to remove the red tiles and bitumen and fit wooden flooring in the bedroom and tile flooring in the ensuite.
1) Can I safely remove the red tiles myself or do I need to get a specialist company in, due to the asbestos risk ?
2) Having looked on the internet I believe that I can lay a plastic sheet down on the concrete floor in the bedroom. Followed by the matting for wooden floors and finally a floating wooden floor. Could anyone tell me if this is the correct way to go ?
3) In the ensuite as I need to dig up the concrete in places to run waste pipes etc what approach should I used to provide a DPM that I can put tiles on ? I have looked at the paint on DPMs but the ones I am aware of need a 1 inch screed over the top, which would mean a step up into the ensuite which would be unacceptable.
Finally, I can’t get my head around how to ensure the integrity of a DPC below the stud wall, as I will need to fix the wall to the floor somehow. Any fixing I use will therefore have to penetrate the DPC and concrete below. Can someone explain a way to do this ?
Sorry for all the questions but I need to progress this project to gain some brownie points with her that must be obeyed !
