Concrete lintel damage

Looking for a bit of advice I need to move an interior doorway to the side about 40mm, I removed the old door lining and was going to cut the 40mm off the bricks one side so I can shift it over, but then I look at the concrete lintel and there’s a crack in the corner of it the side I want to shift the door to, any ideas? Its failing in shear, it may be OK with 40mm shaved off the wall it may not, how lucky do you feel, leave well alone or put in a new lintel

Would it make a difference if it was load bearing or not? Or does that lintel signify that it is load bearing? Because there is actually two doorways in that one wall but we’re blocking one up

Wouldn't be a lintel there if it wasn't load bearing, how much load there is is another question. i.e. just a few bricks above it or ceiling joists also bearing down on it

Without knowing the load, that lintel is gone and needs to be replaced. Check what it is supporting first and decide from there. Consider replacing it with a steel instead - a 100x100 SHS would do the job and would slide in easily without too much hacking about and would give you plenty of room to dry-pack the gap. You could then make the opening 50-100mm wider with no issue.

Well it’s the top floor of my house so I’m assuming just the roof joists, and there is not wall below this one.

Some of the lintel is in the wall which is an outside wall, would that affect a steel one?

No. If the load is small a 65mm concrete would probably be enough. Only problem is, you'd have a bigger gap to fill, which might be more awkward than dry-packing.

It’s a 686mm door way so a 900mm lintel will do
