Trying to thread galvanised metal conduit, but it keeps turning in the vice.
The vice is as tight as its possible to get, its clean and no cutting compound on it.

The die is new, do these get blunt quickly.

tried to put stuff in the vice to aid grip, it just keeps turning as I thread.

Its taking about 10 mins to do a little thread

any suggestions

How old is your vice?

Are you tightening it up tight enough?

You say your die is new so that shouldn't be a problem. They last ages.

What cutting compound are you using?

Try working some compound into the die so the thread gets well lubricated as you cut it.

Unlikely to be the conduit, but what brand / supplier are you using?

Just thought is your die definately the right way round in your stocks?

Sounds like your pipe vice has had it, to be honest, the jaws don't last forever, especially if the work is allowed to slip in them regularly, i am assuming you are using a pipe vice and not a normal metalwork vice?

Is it your technique? You need to back off regularly and unwind the die completly and tap it out to clear swarf, also, as mentioned, use the cutting compound sparingly!

I had one which used to bind a bit when it was brand spanking new. Soon stopped, but for a while I had to be more cautious with how far I cut, and more generous with backing off.

The bender is hired and it looks brand new.

I am not to experienced with conduit work to have tried with a little compound, lots of compound no effect

the die will only go one way so I presume its the right way round

everything cleaned no swarf (sp) tried backing off every half turn quarter turn
It just feels like the die is catching to much

Wrong size die for the pipe - are you using metric or imperial sized pipe/die

Tried new die still no good, but a pair of mole grips on the pipe ,and the pipe bended it self stopping the grips turning solved the problem.

Do what, please post a pic of your dies and the vice.

what's hard to grasp?
the conduit is slipping in the vice so he clamped a pair of mole grips on the pipe and wedged them against the stand, stopping the conduit from turning..

sounds to me like the vice has no teeth left..
take a file to it and sharpen the teeth..

I'll take a pic of my pipe vice tomorrow for the OP to have a look at and see if his is in a similar condition.
