Connecting a washing machine to water taps

Hiya,
My brother just got given a second hand whirpool washing machine. He's in a new flat and when we connected the pipes to the hot and cold feeds it drips at the connectors when they're turned on, even though we turned them as tight as possible with our hands.

I suggested tape or paste that might make the connectors fit better. Was this right? or Should he get new hot and cod feed pipes?

Are the fibre washers with the pipes?

yes it sounds like the rubber washers are missing they can drop out of the pipe end. they are seated in the base of the plastic threaded end that fits onto your washing machine when fitted hand tightning these pipes onto your machine should be sufficient.
