My daughter says we can do this so we can see films on our tele which come through the computer. As I'm in the middle of lifting up the floorboards to rewire, I might as well do this too, but what sort of cable do I need? ( the tele is 8 months old) and what else will I have to do?

You can buy a vga cable as long as the laptop has the output. Some of the newer laptops, have a HDMI output on as well and most new t.v's do....

Nice one Active eeeerrrr, I have a 3yr old PC from PCworld, what does an HDMI output look like? and have I got one?

If it's 3 years old it's unlikely to have an HDMI socket - it may have, but it's unlikely.

Question is, what inputs does your TV have?

If you can post the make and model of both your PC and your TV, it'll make it easier to post practical suggestions specific to your setup, and you won't have to wade through any solutions which don't apply to your setup.

No prob, the tele is a sanyo with a VGA and 2 HDMI sockets, the computer is a Packard Bell 2380 (2007)

My opinion mate, lay both if you can afford it. VGA will always be around, however newer laptops/computers have HDMI which is much better quality - especially if you have a HD TV.

VGA is quite cheap, HDMI not so, but if cost is not an issue then do both ;)

Ok, I can't find any spec info on that model of PC. But don't rush to bin it just yet.....

If you want to connect it to your TV you can do it with a VGA-VGA cable, similar to this :-

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Belkin-Pro-Monitor-Replacement-Cable/dp/B0000B1K4E/ref=cm_cr_pr_pb_t

You'll need to switch the TV on and cycle through your TV's inputs to find the VGA input, VGA input is not usually "auto-sensed" by the tv so you have to switch to that input manually. Check your TV manual if you don't know how to do this.

That'll give you a picture. If you want sound too then you'll need an audio cable similar to this one :-

http://www.amazon.co.uk/3m-3-5mm-Ja...1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1283235743&sr=1-1

But you'll need to check your TV's audio inputs first to make sure you have a socket to plug that audio cable into. It'll be a socket that's the same size as the connector on your sound card on your PC that your speaker plug in to, and it'll be marked as "line in" or "mic" or similar. If it's marked as "phones" or has a symbol looking like a pair of headphones then it's an output socket and so no good for you. If that's the case then you'd need to stick with the sound from your PC speakers.

Hope this helps.....
