other than cost is there any cons over the typical chip board worktop.

Not game over, but a bit of a pain to repair.
Having helped take delivery of a pre-cut, pre-shaped granite worktop in an L shape with cut-outs
and handballed it up a driveway and into the house, I can vouch that it is very heavy, both in weight and underpant changes.
Looking back, I don't know how we did it without breaking it.
