Hey all,

Bought myself a nice glass roofed conservatory from ufit. Made to measure DIY install. Cant fault it, eaves beam notched out and wall plate drilled for rafters. Delivered on friday and its flying up, until this point.

The wall plate is notched big time at one end (the firring box end). They have notched off where the rafter should sit, I have continued my installation as I assume this is normal and maybe its to sit on the firring box. I have just flicked through the manual (sysnseal global 600) and it appears the wall plate should not be notched and the inside of the firring is cut out around it and the out leaf cloaks it.

I have never done one of these before, and everything that has been pre-cut/drilled has been spot on so I can only assume this notched wallplate maybe correct and I am stumped, however the more I think about the more I think surely the plate should take the weight of the rafter, glass and snow and not the firring. I have uploaded pics they show wall plate for another rafter drilled fine and also the wall plate notched out leaving the rafter nowhere to sit. The other 2 photos show the eaves beam drilled with rafter in place and the the end for the firring which is slightly notched but leaving the rafter seat and pre drilled to take the rafter.

Please any advice would be great, as i was hoping to finish off tomorrow as I start a new contract on monday hence why I am posting now before phoning ufit for advise on monday

The furring should be fixed down into the frame, the wall plate should then sit on top, there should be a coupler that goes between the frame and furring, picture not clear but it may already be on.
I take it the furring is only on one side?
The end bar should then be fixed to the wallplate, furring and ring beam
(I think), this should then finish in the same position as the other bars.... Hopefully!

Thanks for the reply. The problem is the end bar has nothing to sit on at the wall plate because the have notched the wall plate. I assume the end bar is not supposed to be supported by the furring and should sit from eaves to wall plate like the rest

Can you put the furring in place on top the frame and take a picture,

I have taken an off cut of furring and offered it up with the coupler piece on top and as you can see fits lovly, but in the global 600 manual it tells you not to notch the wall plate around the furruing, but to notch the internal leafs of the furring around the wall plate. I have added a picture of the eaves beam aswell to show that this has been predrilled and notched correctly.

Just to give you a heads up as to why I have not fully installed the actual furring first. This is because they set my roof for a 2.5 pitch however I have managed to increase this a little more (self cleaning pilkington, so more angle the better) and was planning to taylor the furring when happy (they gave me plenty so not a prioblem)

I am just concerned that the rafter will be supported by furring not wall plate, is this normal?

Interesting ..... we recently had a roof with the same issues , and we'd never come across it before...all went together fine in the end though.....

so how did you get on with not being able to faten the end rafter to the wall plate, did you just sit it on top of the furring and screwed it down?

We just sat it on the firrings in the end, personally not happy with doing it that way , as I would much prefer it sat on the wallplate, just for piece of mind! but in theory , if your firrings are solid then it shouldn't effect the overall roof....

Not sure, take it you got instructions with it , as they will dictate what the manufacturer will advise...

As goes the glass, its still sat in the wall plate at the top, the roof bar will be that of a self supporting type, so shouldn't bend, and the roof bar is fixed at the ring beam, so it should be alright, not ideal in my eyes though.

It can't hurt to ask U fit ( and I'd get it in writing just in case! ), then at least if anything does go wrong , you have built it as the supplying company told you to.....

Upvc frames do have flex/movement from opening closing doors, wind etc even if only minimal which is why rafters are fitted to a solid one peace eve and one peace plate so that as the structure may flex a tad from impacts etc then the roof structure doesn't. Also the manual doesn't tell u to notch the plate and then on top of all this where does it leave your warranty when using such expensive glass.

you will notice once its glazed a bit of the flex disappears, as all the capping pieces hold the glass in situ. The nature of Upvc, in big frames, it will flex a little even with reinforcing in it.

Best bet , ask U fit , if they say thats how they advise doing it , do it, but get it in writing, Just in case!

Thanks crank
Thats the guide I already have and thats where it says notch the furring and not the wallplate. I have now installed the furring with the rafter attatched and I am not happy with it, it does move wobble etc. I know it wont when the glass is in but thats because the glass will hold it rigid, didnt really want to rely on glass holding the rafter in place, should be the other way round.
