Hi and thank you for taking the time to read this.

I am installing a electric double oven and hob, the cable is 30 amp cable and fused at 30 amp.
looking on the installation details for both
the hob states max 6 kw
the oven 5.5 to 6.1

Is the cable and fuse ok to occommodate these

thanks again

Flameport - heard of diversity?

porscheman - what SIZE is the cable? in mm sq?

using diversity it should be fine to put both on 6mm t&e with a 32A mcb unless the manufacturers hand book says different

I would personally install an additional circuit. It seems a big combined load even with diversity applied for a single 30A circuit.

Yeah, I know, Rob, just wanted to remind folk there is an alternative...

bob. You have not answered many questions:

The size you've given me in mm but not mm². What colour are the conductors?

Imperial cable has greater external dimensions that its metric equivalent.

What does the manufacturer's handbook say on the requirements of installation?

Please use the reference sections to look up cable sizes from external dimensions & diversity, to see how to calculate it.

Hi Again and thankyou for your time

The cable is 6.0mm2
Twin and Earth cable. From the Cooker Switch with a 30 amp fuse

Agreed!

Had the exact same thing last week. A 5.4kW Cooker and 5.9kW Hob.
Comet (bless em) refused to connect to the existing 30A circuit because:

a) There was not a connection unit present,
b) A seperate 'spur' was needed for the hob!!!

So he called us in and needless to say, a spur wouldn't suffice.

Considered diversity, but knowing he was a chef I assumed the worse, and installed an additional supply.

However if push comes to shove 6mm2 is acceptable. In the electricians guide to the building regs (green book by IEE) P45 this arrangement is listed under standard domestic circuits. They even say it is acceptable for cooker control unit with a socket and a run of up to 40m. Lots of new builds use the standard circuit arrangements listed in this publication. I have done it myself, although as a matter of personal preference I always change the CCU to one without a socket.

Correction.........Yes is OK according to P48 of said publication. Sounds like a BS3036 and not MCB so P45 does not apply
