I was giving some advice to a friend who wants to fit an electric cooker to replace his old gas cooker.

He already has a cooker outlet on the wall.

I told him he will need about 2m of flexible cable to enable the unit to be pulled out for cleaning ( and initial connection. )

Most electric cookers I see are connected with 6242Y flat T&E cable which is really intended for fixed wiring.

Looking at Screwfix and Toolstation I can see why as neither sells flexible cable cut to size ( under 15m ).

Is this a simple matter of everyone knows how it should be done but the suppliers costings make it stupidly expensive to do it right?

Its more like everyone knows how it should be done, but while T and E is a bit rough it doesn't cause any issues in practice and folk are lazy

Go to a proper wholesaler and they will

And probably if you are fussy it ought to be heat resisting!

I think a local CEF will cut it but then they are dead helpful there. Only been open a few months but you would think the two guys there owned it they are so helpful.

It's weird - people have used 6.0 mm2 T+E for wiring directly into the backs of cookers for absolute decades, 70 years or more.

Yet it never seems to fail or cause a problem.

I would never consider using something like solid 2.5mm2 T+E for a 16amp oven though - that feels so wrong, and I've hardly ever seen it done anywhere.

I suppose it feels acceptable that 6.0mm2 T+E is stranded - though the earth wire has been solid for something like 55 years.

I suppose some habits die hard.

I reality yes

There is absolutely no issue with using 4mm T+E. Unless you move your oven out every other week to clean it, of course.
