I am going to be having a real flame gas fire installed in a few months time. I need a cage or cowl to be put on the chimney to stop the birds falling down it or dropping things down it. I've had a number of roofers quote me for the cage/cowl but one of them has just told me that it needs to be done by someone Corgi registered. None of the other roofers mentioned this - is it true? If so, are the others trying to take me for a ride? Also, am I OK with a cage or do I have to have a cowl?

Thanks for your help.

Dackers.

i would go for the corgi to install the lot. he will know what chimney terminal you'll need and should fit it also.

After the widget has been fitted the fire needs checking - by a corgi. It wouldn't be the first time if a dollop of mortar went down onto the fire!
I'd suggest that you try to find out from the company what cowl you need, then call a corgi who would subcontract a roofer..

Not many CORGIs will be happy getting to your chimney unless you have scaffolding built up to that level.

Roofers are prepared to climb on flimsey ladders and live dangerously. Problem is that finding an honest one is less likely as their prices start at £300 per job!

Make sure you agree fixed prices in advance.
